Whether you're new to the workforce, changing careers, or returning to school, our step-by-step application process is designed to guide you quickly and confidently into the program that fits your goals. From financial aid to career advising, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

FOLLOW THESE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Join us for an in-person (or virtual option) session to explore program options, ask questions, and learn how Lorain County JVS can support your career goals.

  • Apply for federal aid (FAFSA), available grants, and/or payment plans. Our team will help you build a personalized financial plan that works for you.

  • All programs require documentation of high school diploma, GED or transcripts. Individual programs may have additional requirements. We'll guide you through submitting any medical documentation, applications or assessments needed.

  • Review, sign your official enrollment paperwork and pay $100 registration fee—quickly and securely—through our online system.

Admission Requirements

Students must be 18+ and have a high school diploma or GED to enroll in COE-accredited programs.
Exceptions apply for special programs like the Adult Diploma Program (ADP) or credential-enhancing options for high school students, with administrative approval and documentation.

  • 1.) Attend a First Step to Success! Info Session
    All prospective students must attend an in-person session to learn about program expectations, requirements, and to explore the JVS learning environment. Virtual sessions may be available as needed.
  • 2.) Financial Aid & Funding
    After the info session, students enrolling in 600+ hour programs must attend a financial aid meeting. This meeting helps determine eligibility for Pell Grants, Direct Loans, or outside support like OhioMeansJobs. All students must show proof of high school completion by providing a copy of a diploma, GED, or transcripts to finalized funding options.
  • 3.) Program-Specific Requirements
    Some programs may require additional steps: Drug testing Physical exams Immunization records Background checks *Please note that funding may be available to cover some of these costs.
  • 4.) Supplies & Career Readiness
    Some programs require students to purchase personal tools or supplies. OMJ or grant funding may assist eligible students. All programs include employability skills and job placement support.
  • 5.) Final Enrollment
    To complete enrollment, students must: Have funding options in place Provide a copy of high school diploma, GED or transcripts Pay a $100 deposit Sign the electronic enrollment agreement
  • 6.) Important Completion Requirement
    To earn a certificate, students must: Attend at least 90% of program hours Achieve at least a 70% grade average Successfully complete all required coursework *Please note that some programs have stricter attendance and grade requirements

Apply For FAFSA

  • To qualify for Pell Grants/Direct Loans, students must:

    • Have financial need (except some loans)

    • Be enrolled in a program of 600 hours & 15 weeks

    • Meet academic progress standards

    • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen

    • Have a diploma or GED

    • Have a valid Social Security Number

    • Use aid only for education

    • Not owe grant repayments or be in loan default

    • Not be incarcerated

    • Not be convicted of drug-related offenses (exceptions may apply)

    • Not have a property with federal lien

    • Provide financial aid history

    • Provide complete, accurate application info

    • Notify Financial Aid Office of any changes

    • Aid is not renewable—apply annually

    • Aid may be adjusted if there are funding changes or errors

    • Cannot use aid at multiple schools simultaneously

    • Must account for all tuition costs before registering

    • Comply with all Department of Education regulations

  • If your financial situation has changed (job loss, hardship):

    • Contact the Financial Aid Supervisor

    • Schedule a review

    • Complete the Special Consideration Form

    • Provide required documentation

  • Currently available for:

    • Automotive Service Technician

    • Esthetician

    If your program is not listed, it does not qualify for federal aid. Please explore Funding Options.

  • Financial aid bridges the gap between what you can afford and the cost of your education. Awards are based on financial need using a federally approved "need analysis."

  • To apply for a Pell Grant or Direct Stafford Loan:

    1. Complete the FAFSA

    2. Receive your Student Aid Report (SAR)

    3. School uses your Student Aid Index (SAI) to determine award

    Programs under 900 hours receive reduced aid.
    Allow 4–6 weeks to complete paperwork—plan ahead!

  • You’re considered Independent if you meet any of the following:

    • Age 24 before Jan 1 of the award year

    • Married

    • Have dependent children you support 50%

    • Active duty or veteran

    • Orphan, ward of the court, emancipated, or homeless

    If none apply, you’re a Dependent student and must provide parent info on the FAFSA.

  • Cost of Attendance (COA) includes:

    • Tuition, fees

    • Housing, meals

    • Books, supplies, transportation

    Student Aid Index (SAI): Ranges from –1500 to 999999

    • Lower SAI = Higher financial need

    • Used by schools to calculate eligibility
